I obtained my first degree and Master of Science degree in Organic Chemistry and Chemical Technology at PoznaƄ University of Technology in Poland. Then I completed my PhD in Chemical Engineering at Imperial College, London. I was working on a project sponsored by Unilever, measuring shearing forces between two phospholipid monolayers deposited on a solid surface. I then had a career break while my children were young, in which period I set up a Saturday School for children in the Polish community in Oxford, in which I taught, and was the headmistress. I also designed and built a house in Oxford, inspired by Gaudi after a visit to Barcelona. This involved managing the whole project, supervising workers, ordering materials and doing some of the work myself.
